Cue the Roberto Carlos jokes.

Chris Taylor "parts ways" with South! As seen on the club's website
South Melbourne FC can today confirm that the club has parted ways with head coach, Chris Taylor.
Taylor’s coaching journey at South Melbourne comes to an end after four and a half years, having joined in July 2013 from Dandenong Thunder.
During his time at the club, he secured the league and entrance into the Westfield FFA Cup, including a run in the competition that culminated in an historic Semi-Final against Hyundai A-League outfit Sydney FC.
Speaking to smfc.com.au, SMFC President Leo Athanasakis thanked Taylor for his efforts at SMFC: “Chris has been an integral part of the club and the Senior team over the last four and a half years. We would like to place on record our appreciation of Chris’ contribution and we wish him well in his future endeavours.”
So Chris Taylor has "parted ways" with the club. This is a very sudden turn of events just a month out from the start of the season. The causes which lead to this shock departure are unknown to me. After taking a break towards the end of last year, Taylor was back in control in January, and from his outward demeanour it looked like business as usual.

The vague language used in the club statement will no doubt give rise to a lot of different theories about what happened behind the scenes for Taylor's tenure to end; after all, we had a friendly as recently as last night, and football director Nick Maikousis was in attendance with a big smile. Nature abhors a vacuum, and thus thoughts will automatically go to some sudden and irrevocable breach of trust between Taylor and the board.

Taylor's stint as South coach will mostly be remembered fondly. There were championships and trophies won after a long drought, and a necessary dose of self-respect reestablished onfield. While he had a budget exceeding many of the coaches who came before him, he made it work for him; and it's worth remembering other clubs competed with larger budgets. Sometimes his ultra-pragmatism, despite the results it achieved, put people off; it wasn't always the most rousing style of play.

Not everyone was happy with the playing style, or Taylor's demeanour, or some of his personnel and disciplinary decisions. After the initial novelty of winning after we hadn't won for a long time started to wear off, people would get grumpy in the South way. But the style was never quite as dour as it was made out to be, and the team tended to score more goals than most, naturally playing towards its strengths of having the league's best goalscorer. And when the team did fire up, Taylor's teams would play sweeping wing oriented football that was enjoyable to watch.

On a personal level, I'd like to thank Chris for his service to the club, and for making time to have the odd chat about tactics and personnel decisions.

As for who's next, and what it means for the players we've signed, the players we'd like to sign, and the rest of the coaching staff... well, we all wait with baited breath.

  1. On a lighter note, congrats to Brad Norton for managing to survive the CT era as the only player to have been at the club before CT to outlast CT.

  2. Thanks also to the club for making my 4k word slog on the AGM redundant almost immediately. I bet that was your plan all along, wasn't it?

  4. What a frightening turn of events.

    The season starts next month and we have all woken up to this bombshell!

    The club needs to come forward and provide an explanation on why CT is no longer our coach. This brief announcement is piss poor.

    In the last 4.5 years, CT was able to turn things around, win trophies, and restore the club to being a powerhouse of Victorian football once more. Reports of Kolman taking over are laughable. This would be another cost cutting measure. We need an experienced coach who has a record of winning silverware.

    The question is - will players who are loyal to CT move to his next club?

    1. Kolman does have a UEFA a/pro license meaning he is one of the few in the country to have these qualifications. But agree it's a joke and pisspoor by the club

    2. Heard the players might've turned on CT
      Jawadi also coming back didn't help things

    3. Do you mean players as in a directors son/nephew?

    4. Kolman is a puppet for Mesourouni.
      With his son now being in the senior squad!

    5. So you're telling us that the main reason he was fired is because he refused to play Messerounis son, that can't be right. In what way too is Kolman a puppet

    6. Funny to see the directors son back in training with the senior squad as soon as CT departs

  5. Our preparation for the new season has now been rocked with losing our most successful coach in the post NSL era.

    Which coaches are out there that could fill these big shoes?

  6. I think it is pretty obvious the board deliberately held off on announcing this until after your AGM. Very dodgy

  7. Unfortunately the main reason for the dismissal is due to Chris being reluctant to allow a board member's son to train/play with the senior team. This same board member called Chris to sack him.

    It's the same reason the relationship was terminated with Morris in Spain. The Spanish club wouldn't allow the son to train/play with seniors. At least Sth won't be having dud internationals rocking up from Spain anymore.

    The new coach won't be having these misunderstandings. His Visa is sponsored.

    1. How can the people on the board making these decision have conflicting interests, one with a son, the other with a nephew in the senior squad....

  8. Maybe the board has engaged Stan Lazaridis and co to help appoint our next coach? It will take a highly credentialed "think tank" to make sure we make the right appointment for our first season back in the A-League next year :)

    And so it goes .......

  9. It's pretty clear that once Frankie left that no one else could go on.
    Sad to see him go, not CT.

  10. Did anyone happen to listen to Taylor interview on 3XY yesterday to give us a rundown?

    1. CT said he was sacked by a telephone call on Saturday morning. He said he would be talking to his lawyer as he still had 2 years left on his contract. He thanked all the fans and said he loved his time at the club.

      My opinion - How can you sack someone in such an impersonal way after 4.5 years and plenty of silverware and success?????? Its just not on. Absolutely pathetic.

      And the thing is - WE STILL DONT KNOW WHY HE WAS SACKED ??????

    2. Thanks for the summary.

  11. Personally I'd like to see Milos captain/coach the club. I'd also like to see him float between goalkeeper and striker.

    And possibly make a run at club presidency, which will be a pre-cursor to his run for U.S Presidency at the conclusion of Trump's reign of terror.

    All hail Milos.

  12. Valkanis will be the new coach

  13. Paul, do you think the announcement of Chris Taylor's sacking was deliberately delayed for after the AGM? Too much of a coincidence if you ask me.

    1. Definitely, the timing and execution (from a Machiavellian or Sun Tzu standpoint) was brilliant. It's too early to tell if this initial tactical victory for the board will lead to an overall strategic victory, because who can tell what their overall strategic goal is.

      In other words, yes, I think this was planned in this or a similar way.

  14. The club needs an overhaul from top to bottom! This is not the South Melbourne we once knew. The people on the board to not have the capability of the boards of the glory years. We talk a BIG game and cannot even succeed in doing the basic things right. Being an NPL club and having debt is not a good start to the lofty A-League ambitions. Let's get rid of the smoke and mirror rhetoric and build strong foundations before we worry about A-League

  16. I thought I heard 3XY state that a (local?) Greek would be the coach.

  17. This idiotic decision has the potential to tear the club apart. Fans have only stuck around because of the success Taylor and the team has had. It has basically covered up the many off field issues that those running the club have screwed up. The main one being the delusional A League 'bid' which has been nothing short of shambolic and humiliating for us. Complete waste of time and money. The lack of alternatives and lack of accountability has led to a complacent board who seem to make one bad decision after the other. Sacking the coach a few days after holding an AGM during a weeknight in the middle of holiday season is cowardly and the height of arrogance. Not really the type of people I want running my club.

  20. When this board eventually fucks off from the club, they will be forgotten.

    CT and his achievements will always be remembered at this club fondly and with great appreciation.

  21. I spent quite some time last year trying to stir up anti-taylor sentiment in this here comments section in a bid to play a small role to any potential CT sacking and subsequent hellas decline. To see hellas do this on their own accord leaves me feeling a bit disheartened.

    It is nonetheless fantastic news. See you in the relegation battle.

    Knights fan.

    PS The fact that no a-league club has given him a shot despite his impressive record is typical ozsoccer dumbassery. Maybe now that he's free to sniff around he'll get his chance.

  22. Hi again Paul, got something for you and your members.

  23. Paul here’s a good idea for the Sth members that feel their board is not listening to them or don’t take their AGM seriously or even attend their AGMs for that matter.
    Wanderers have set up a member’s group to air their concerns with their club and they can’t even vote as they are only season ticket holders.
    Think your Sth mob have an election coming soon. Get active or stop complaining.

    ‘Wanderers held the first meeting of the club's inaugural Member Committee.
    The Western Sydney Wanderers announced at the 2017 Member Forum that as part of a new Member and fan engagement initiative the club would be forming a Member Committee.
    The aim of the committee is to provide a platform for a cross-section of club Members to represent to wider Membership base.
    Meeting with club personnel, the Member Committee is tasked to discuss key topics and questions that the wider Membership base seeks further information or clarity on, as well as giving Members the opportunity to provide feedback and have discussion on several areas within the club.
    The high quality of candidates that put their names forward to be part of the inaugural Member Committee was outstanding and the club thanks all Members that applied. All applications that were received were impressive and showed the passion that exists for the club within the Membership base.
    After a thorough review of all applicants the club is proud to announce the following Members who have been selection to be part of this season's Member Committee:
    * Peter Theos (Gold Member)
    * Lee McKerracher (Red Member)
    * Chris Gilchrist (Red Member)
    * Chris Bettiol (Black Member)
    * Robyn McKenna (Black Member)
    * Scott Gow (White & Black Member)
    * Melissa Brooks (White & Black Member)
    * Ernst Meyer (Red & Black Member)
    * Bradford Gorman (Red & Black Member)
    * Jem Baigent (Supporter Member)
    The first committee meeting was held on Monday 27 November 2017. Nine of the ten Members were in attendance with CEO John Tsatsimas and three key staff members from the club.
    An open discussion took place with a clear focus on improving fan and match day experience at the current venues with a further mandate to understand and discuss Member issues and concerns around a number of areas within the club.’

    Glad to help
