Mehmet artefact Wednesday - Selangor FA pennant

Oh, so many fond memories of Selangor's tour of late 2013. I suppose it all started before they'd even thought of touring, when former South Melbourne Hellas championship player Mehmet Durakovic quit his post as South Melbourne FC director of football or technical director or whatever it was that he was doing with us, and took up the gaffer's job at Selangor, where he played in the 1990s. Then news filtered through that Selangor was in Australia as part of their pre-season schedule, and were using Lakeside as a training base. Would South Melbourne play them in a friendly? Would it be open doors? Would someone from the club say it was closed doors even it wasn't? Yes, yes/no/kinda and yes, but with appropriate caveats! And thus Gains and I went to this game expecting not very much and getting it. All of which is a very long winded way of saying that this week's artefact is the pennant Selangor presented us with prior to the game, and which was last seen somewhere in team manager Frank Piccione's dungeon. You know, because we don't have a social club and stuff.

  1. Excellent to see the Wed artefact back. Can't even remember that they came out. So what was the score?

Just curious if you made it to our friendly back in '93 against Korean side Posco Atoms? I'll have a look to see if I can find the flyer promoting that game.

    1. Score was 4-0 to Selangor, as you would expect against the kids we put out there.

    1. Things have built up noticeably over the last 18 months. I'm not going to lie and say the numbers are huge, but they are significantly higher and more consistent than a few years ago. Considering my lack of advertising, and the niche topic at hand, I'm quite happy with the numbers.

The NPL saga certainly gave the site a boost, as did the Whole of Football bollocks, being one of the few 'media' sites to give those issues any sort of coverage.

More people commenting though has also helped. It means people are more likely to comment knowing that their comments will get read, and possibly receive comments in return, feeding into a cycle where people visit and re-visit.

Credit also to Twitter though. It's done wonders for the blog's profile, relatively speaking.

    2. I see what's happening now...
Sneaky croats are clocking up the hits in order to have Paul get a sniff of advertising dollars and subsequently sell out. Very clever and very subtle. The real derby is well and truly still alive.

Btw, who gets the gate takings on friday, home side or split 50/50?

  3. Miss the old SMFC Museum... OK, it might have just been a few trophy cases near each other but I was small and they were big. Walking around there used to feel to me like I'd broken into and was wandering the lost treasurers of a Egyptian Pyramid.

A few notes on comments.

We've had a lot of fun over the years with my freewheeling comments policy, but all good things must come to an end. Therefore I will no longer be approving comments that contain personal abuse of any sort.

Still, if your post doesn't get approved straight away, it's probably because I haven't seen it yet.

As usual, publication of a comment does not mean endorsement of its content.
