However, he was a couple of year older than me (even more ancient. MelbCro).

It appears that Soccer was not being offered as an option at the primary schools in our are until about 1975. This is about the time that the immigrant children who migrated there from the inner suburbs were reaching Grade's 5 and 6. It also coincided, perhaps, with Australia's involvememnt in the 1974 World Cup.

As an aside, this friend of mine is half Serbian/half German background and had very little interest in Soccer growing up.Savvas Tzionhshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05763693747144083898noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7503414687298565438.post-92026727022806332262017-02-01T15:28:27.745+11:002017-02-01T15:28:27.745+11:00Righto, i`ll see what i can conjure from the keybo...Righto, i`ll see what i can conjure from the keyboard.

StormyAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7503414687298565438.post-72389902521011947092017-02-01T11:34:01.605+11:002017-02-01T11:34:01.605+11:00I would also love to see that piece, Stormy.I would also love to see that piece, Stormy.Paulhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03206486881622385464noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7503414687298565438.post-50371312402558744832017-02-01T11:18:21.401+11:002017-02-01T11:18:21.401+11:00Now THAT would be a cracking read Stormy :o)Now THAT would be a cracking read Stormy :o)Kimon Trimbolinoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7503414687298565438.post-60105298356644016632017-02-01T10:42:31.124+11:002017-02-01T10:42:31.124+11:00I sometimes wonder how my involvement with the spo...I sometimes wonder how my involvement with the sport would have evolved if Melbourne had a broad based team, like Northern Spirit, in the NSL. For a semi-amateur competition to have no aggregate league wide crowd growth from 1979-1995 means drastic actions needed to happen. It wasn't until the Dockers entered the comp that this aggregate moves up (Eg total WAFL/AFL crowds). Economics changes sporting culture. There is an interesting piece to be done about the Melbourne Gold Rush and the influence of Cycling in that period and its influence on sport in Australia. South melbourne scored in 2nd minute, but eventually were overrun by Heidleberg 4 - 1. Strangely it appears that it was 1978, when I thought that I was not attending any soccer http://www.ozfootball.net/ark/NSL/1978/Round18.html

I also just did some investigating and found that the South Melbourne v Marconi match where South lost 4 nil at home was not during the abysmal 1979 season, but was ALSO 1978, and it was a 3 nil loss. http://www.ozfootball.net/ark/NSL/1978/Round08.html.

What this highlights is that my sole appearance at any NSL football is even more stark than I thought. No games between 1978 and 1983, except for 2 in one day in 1981!!!Savvas Tzionhshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05763693747144083898noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7503414687298565438.post-69536686204496590552017-01-31T11:23:13.386+11:002017-01-31T11:23:13.386+11:00Lately I have become quite interested in South Aus...Lately I have become quite interested in South Australian and Western Australian Australian Rules football.

This website has links to heaps of youtube videos of the SANFL.

http://safootballvideoarchive.webs.com/

Unfortunately I think you need to buy the WAFL stuff on youtube.

I look back at the times we here in Victoria would plunder the best talent from SA and WA, in the end helping to destroy the two competitions.

It actually feels criminal to me.Savvas Tzionhshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05763693747144083898noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7503414687298565438.post-54539140741038997072017-01-31T10:32:19.032+11:002017-01-31T10:32:19.032+11:00I only just realised that I have made TWO referenc...I only just realised that I have made TWO references to Dandenong in this piece.

There is no link whatsoever between the two references. Sometimes when you migrate to a new place, connection to a particular culture/sport is needed more than in your home town.... Chris EganAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com
